A notebook is a place to begin

Some ideas need a little more time on the desk. A note on patience, open pages, and letting a thought find its own shape.
The first page of a new notebook always seems to ask for a better sentence than the one I have. I have learned to disappoint it quickly. A date, a few words about the weather, an incomplete thought: now the notebook can do its work.
What matters is having somewhere to return. A page can hold an idea without asking whether it is ready. It can keep a question open long enough for another question to arrive beside it.
After a while, patterns become visible. A phrase appears more than once. A small irritation turns out to be an interesting problem. What looked like a collection of fragments begins to resemble a direction.
