The books we return to

The best books change while we are away from them. Or perhaps we do. These are the pages I keep finding my way back to.
A book read twice is not quite the same book. The first time, we follow the story. The second, we notice the room around it: the quiet sentence, the pause, the small detail that once seemed unimportant.
I keep a little shelf for returning. These books have no common subject. What connects them is the feeling of a conversation that has more to offer. A pencilled line in the margin marks an earlier version of my attention.
Rereading asks for no particular achievement. We can open a familiar chapter, spend a little time there, and close the cover. Sometimes that is enough to send us back into the day with a slightly different question.
