The everyday agreement called money

essay · 2026-10-29T04:03:00Z

A payment looks like a simple exchange. Underneath it sits a shared agreement about what can settle a bill and make the next exchange possible.

Money is commonly described through three functions: a medium of exchange, a unit of account, and a store of value. These are different jobs. Paying for a meal, comparing two prices, and carrying purchasing power into next month are related activities, but they ask different things of money.

As a medium of exchange, money lets a transaction proceed without requiring each participant to want exactly what the other offers. As a unit of account, it gives prices a common language. As a store of value, it can bridge time, although changes in purchasing power matter.

The functions are useful because they help separate questions that everyday conversation tends to combine. An object might be easy to spend but awkward for comparing prices. Something that holds value may still be inconvenient to use for small purchases.

The familiar act of paying is therefore a compact piece of coordination. Looking closely at it makes economics feel less like a distant collection of charts and more like a study of the arrangements that allow ordinary life to continue.
