The ordinary, seen again

A familiar room in unfamiliar light. A conversation that stays with you. Small observations from a week of paying closer attention.
On Tuesday, the light reached a corner of the kitchen I had stopped seeing. There was nothing new there: a glass, a chipped plate, the usual stack of letters. For a few minutes, though, everything looked newly arranged.
We tend to imagine that discovery requires distance. A train ticket, a new city, a landscape unlike the one we know. But familiarity has its own unexplored territory. It asks for a different kind of patience.
I am trying to keep a record of these ordinary interruptions. The record is imperfect. A sentence written on a receipt, a photograph taken without much planning. Together they make a useful reminder: the day held more than its list of tasks.
