The quiet art of paying attention

There is a kind of knowledge that arrives only when we slow down. It lives in the margin of a book, in a conversation that runs longer than expected, in the familiar street seen at an unfamiliar hour.
I started this commonplace as a place for those small discoveries. A collection without a rigid catalogue. Somewhere for a thought to become a sentence, and a sentence to become a way of seeing.
We are asked to have an opinion on everything. But attention comes before opinion. It asks us to stay with something long enough to notice its particular shape.
A notebook is a modest technology for this. The page does not refresh. The thought is allowed to remain unfinished. Returning to it a week later, we can sometimes see what we were trying to say.
Perhaps that is the work: to gather the fragments, give them room, and see what they become.
